Over the years we have seen a number of online bingo sites come under scrutiny of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). On 28th June it was the turn of Butlers Bingo and their T&C’s surrounding their welcome offer came under scrutiny.
There was just one complaint about Butlers Bingo and it was concerning the home page of the brand on a mobile device. The main page of the desktop version of the site has the T&C’s clearly available, it wasn’t the case for the mobile version (although this has now been amended).
Tut Tut Butlers Bingo
The complainant challenged whether the ‘Deposit £10, Play With £35’ was misleading because the wagering requirements were not clear. This lead to an investigation under the following two CAP Codes by the ASA:
8.17 All marketing communications or other material referring to sales promotions must communicate all applicable significant conditions or information where the omission of such conditions or information is likely to mislead. Significant conditions or information may, depending on the circumstances, include:
8.17.1 How to participate
How to participate, including significant conditions and costs, and other major factors reasonably likely to influence consumers’ decision or understanding about the promotion
Butlers Bingo Respond
Butlers Bingo took the telling off on the chin and apologised for the omission of wagering requirements on the mobile home page.
Changes have been implemented to sate the ASA and the T&C’s information is now just one click away from the offer.
As a results, and Butlers Bingo aren’t denying the issue, the site was told to ensure that all of their ads included the wagering requirements for the promotions where the omission of them could mislead the end user.
It wasn’t a massive slap on the wrist, a gentle tap in this instant but you do have to ask, would Joe Public really have made this complaint or was it a competitor?
