Cristiano Ronaldo is used to winning awards and being in the limelight, and he has another accolade to celebrate as he recently became the celebrity with the most Facebook likes on his official page, stealing the social crown away from Colombian pop star Shakira.
The Portuguese superstar might be going through a tricky spell with Real Madrid at present with the club in the middle of a relative rut (which some Premiership clubs and ALL amateur clubs would probably refer to as a successful spell); but it seems that his Facebook fan base continues to grow even if Barcelona are currently topping La Liga (the club, incidentally, where Shakira’s partner Gerard Pique plays).
With more than 107 million likes on his official Cristiano Ronaldo Facebook page, Ronaldo is now by far the most popular sports star on Facebook having already become the first celebrity to pass the 100-million likes mark in October having opened his page in 2009. Shakira won’t be losing too much sleep you can’t imagine, as she too has more than 107 million likes on her page, but she now finds herself around 10,000 likes behind the Madrid forward.
Lionel Messi, Ronaldo’s main rival for the title of the world’s best footballer, is second in the list of sports star pages with 78 million likes. From an English perspective it’s worth noting that David Beckham – who is now retired from playing football – has 52 million likes and Wayne Rooney, the England and Manchester United captain, has 10.8 million fans and is 95th on the list.
Strangely, Ronaldo is not having the same level of success on the other major social network, Twitter. Here Ronaldo is ranked just 13th in terms of the most followers with Katy Perry leading the way here with more than 66 million followers – Ronaldo has just 34 million which still makes him the most followed sports star, (Brazilian forward Kaka is next on the list with 22 million).
The likes of Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Barack Obama are all above Ronaldo on the Twitter list.
